Pattern Play: A History of Chevron Pattern

Creative Style Furniture · Mar 30, 2022 · Leave a Comment

We’re feeling like diving into a little history lesson here with our first installment of Pattern Play; a series where we will dive into the history of some of the most iconic and popular patterns we all know and love, starting this week with the chevron pattern.

An antique sofa we reupholstered has a second life with this classic chevron pattern in a soft cream and champaign color way.

Chevron VS. Herringbone

First, let’s clear the air: chevron and herringbone are two different patterns. Yes, they are very similar, both consisting of geometric zig-zags, however a chevron pattern is created with stacked V-shapes side-by-side to create that signature continuous zig-zag pattern whereas herringbone patterns are rectangular shapes placed in a perpendicular overlaying pattern to create a more broken zigzag. Chevron patterns are more modern and geometric, while herringbone patterns are more traditional and have a lived-in, old-world feel.

History Of The Chevron

Chevron patterns can be seen throughout history as decoration on ancient Greek pottery and textiles, as symbols to show personal identity and family lineage in Medieval heraldry as well as signifying military rank on uniforms. The word “chevron” first appeared in English in the 14th century from the Vulgar Latin word caprio, meaning “rafters,” referring to the pattern’s resemblance of two roof beams.

The Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 30s saw an emphasis on symmetry and geometric forms that helped launch chevron patterns to the forefront, laying the foundation for the pattern to become a show runner in fashion and textile design. In the 1960s and 70s the Italian design house Missoni made chevron an integral part of their fashion collections, but it’s most recent spike in popularity happened in 2011 when Target launched an affordable line of Missoni fashion featuring the iconic chevron pattern. The line sold out in less than 24 hours and the frenzy to obtain one of these coveted designs cause the Target website to crash many times.
