There is virtually an endless amount of options out there when it comes to furniture selections, and making up your mind can be quite challenging. If you don’t know where to start or are lost in the couch surfing sea, don’t worry, we’re here with a rescue boat equipped with seven tips to help you along your sofa hunting journey.
Measure Twice
Depending on the type and style of sofa, dimensions may vary, but this handy diagram will help ensure you measure exactly the right size sofa for your space. If your room is larger, you’ll need to decide exactly how much of the space you’ll want your couch to occupy. Do you want to include additional furniture items like coffee tables, side tables or accent chairs? Will you have more than one sofa? All of these are questions you’ll need to think through before purchasing your sofa.

Generally if you’re placing your couch against a wall, there should be about 18 inches of wall space on either side of the couch, the chaise portion of a sectional should not extend more then halfway into your room, and the sofa should of course be in scale with your space as well as the rest of your furniture.
Determine the Orientation
Deciding where exactly you want to place the sofa includes deciding how the sofa will be the most functional for your home and what you want the most out of your space. If you like to wind down in the evening in front of the TV you’ll want to face the couch that direction or if you enjoy hosting friends you’ll want to create a seating area with furniture orientated towards each other with plenty of side tables or a coffee table nearby.

Choose a Shape
There are several different shapes of sofa to choose from, the most popular shapesbeing rectangular or L-shaped, but you could also choose a U-shaped or curved sofa for your space. An L-shaped sofa is great for dividing an open space and creating a break between the living room and dining room, for example, while two curved sofa’s facing one another creates a designated conversation area that’s stylish and cozy.

Select Your Upholstery

Most of us want a fabric that is highly durable as well as gorgeous. The right choice may also be dependent on your design style, but the most durable and easy to maintain fabrics includes cotton, linen and synthetic microfiber. If you have pets or children suede may not be the right material for you as it can be stained and damaged by muddy paws and sticky fingers. Leather is a classic material that never goes out of style, ages well if appropriately cared for and is easy to clean. Many folks are now opting to upholster their furniture in outdoor fabrics as they resist fading in the sun, are water and stain resistant, and easy to care for and clean and look and feel high-end.
