Hey all you cool ghouls and goblins! This whole week on our Instagram we’ve been sharing some of our favorite interior spaces that feature seductive blacks and sultry darks to get you in the Halloween spirit. We thought we’d extend on that idea and give you some of our best tips on how to use black as a prominent color in your interior design. Black doesn’t have to be dark, heavy or cold. If used thoughtfully, black is an excellent color choice that adds depth and heightens the luxury and sophistication of a room.

Make a Statement
Nothing makes a bigger statement than painting your walls black! A black feature wall is a more subtle and safe option for those less adventurous folks who aren’t ready to make the plunge into a fully black room, but a whole room painted black makes a glamorous statement and looks elegant juxtaposed against lighter accents. You should be strategic in your choice of room to paint black, however, as rooms with poor lighting or no windows can look dark and uninviting. With the exception of hallways and powder baths which look dramatic and inviting painted black or another dark color, rooms with low ceilings or minimal natural light can look like a cave. This seductively sophisticated bedroom designed by Marie Flanigan utilizes bright accessories, neutral accent colors and a flood of natural light to keep this bedroom airy despite its black walls, bedding and furniture.

Black as a Texture
Every room needs layers and textures to create a visually striking and interesting balance. Teri Pugh uses large slabs of gorgeous black stone on the fireplace to add a striking punch of black to the center of this living room. Contrasting against tall, stark white walls in a room flooded with light, this modern fireplace with tons of organic veining adds a stunning focal point that balances out the two black leather sofas in the center of the room. When decorating with any bold color, it’s best to use a mixture of differently scaled patterns along with solid swaths of said color to add depth and interest to your designs.

Add a Pop of Color
Think of a black room as a little black dress; it’s a timeless classic that needs the perfect accessories to bring to life. Black paired with red is always a stimulating and striking combination and is effortlessly achieved in this bedroom designed by Veronica Solomon of Casa Vilora. Black walls and floor-to-ceiling curtains provide the perfect backdrop to her bold bedding, unique furniture and glamorous accessories. The architectural details on the ceiling and statement chandelier draw the eye upward and make the space feel larger and the funky mix of patterns and accent colors make the room feel vibrant and alive.

Monochromatic Plus One
It’s possible to decorate a room completely in monochromatic colors, but we recommend adding at least one accent color to liven up the space. This glamorous reception desk sits in a completely monochromatic space that is accented with hits of gold to create a bold and modern art-deco space that is sure to stop anyone in their tracks! Black and white has never and will never go out of style, but it needs just a little something extra to give it personality and make it a truly unique space.
