Ever since the first primitive hand prints adorned cave walls, humans have had an affinity for decorating, beautifying and personalizing their surroundings. Decorating our spaces is not just strategically placing a vase on a credenza, it has deep cultural, emotional and personal connections. As with anything having to do with aesthetics, what you deem ‘beautiful’ is completely subjective and open to many different ideals and principles. We’re sharing some very basic and simple ways to make your life and your home beautiful.

Define What Beautiful Means to You
Firstly, define what ‘beautiful’ means to you. It could be a clean and minimal interior with everything perfectly dust-free and perfectly in it’s place. It could be a maximalist space that takes advantage of every nook and cranny filled to the brim with lovingly collected tchockes and mementos that remind you of every significant and insignificant moment of your life or that simply make you happy.
Perhaps it’s not anything to do with aesthetics at all. It could be a simple home in a rural setting that lets in healing amounts of sunshine and nature sounds with room for gardening and little toes feeling the cool grass beneath them. Or perhaps it’s a home that’s filled with well-worn chairs and sofas aplenty, allowing every single person you love to gather into one room to share in love and laughter and memories of togetherness. Your first step in making your life and home beautiful is to determine what beautiful means to you.

Look At Things From a New Perspective
My grandma was a chronic rearranger. I spent so many afternoons watching her move around pictures, trinkets and furniture and listening to her quietly hum some Cajun tune to herself. She was always looking to find the perfect place for her treasured items she collected throughout her life, and rearranging her home made it feel and look fresh and revitalized. In moments when you’re feeling like your space leaves something to be desired, take a cue from my grandma and spend some time rearranging your items. Curate your space in a way that brings you joy and happiness. Start small, with one corner or one bookshelf, knowing that if your end result still doesn’t feel quite right you take everything off and change it again.
Treat Your Home Well
How well you take care of and treat your home determines how well it will take care of you. Keeping your home clean is an everyday task that some of us struggle with more than others. Healthy habits like making the bed everyday, folding and putting away laundry, keeping dishes out of the sink and changing the air filters regularly are some ways you can stay on top of managing household chores. They say to give what you wish to receive, so give your home some love and it will love you back.

Bring Special Items to The Front
Items that elicit warms memories or that bring you joy should be given special significance in your home. A family heirloom that conjures up memories of loved ones or childhood homes should be out to remind you of those things often. Your favorite piece of art should be hung somewhere you’ll pass everyday. Photos of your kids, friends and loved ones ought to be out on display in all areas of your home. Stack your most beloved books that you read again and again on your coffee table or bedside table. Place that coconut bowl you brought back from vacation near your door as a key catcher or on your dresser to hold your everyday jewelry.
Every truly beautiful home is filled with items collected throughout the owner’s life, that reflect their experiences and personality and aren’t rigid followers of design rules. Put that which is beautiful to you on full display.
Carve Out Your Special Spot
Goodbye man-cave, hello thoughtfully planned out and carefully curated corner or room dedicated to your passions and interests! A home gym, a cozy corner reading nook, an outdoor art studio or a shelf overflowing with collectibles – your home should have a special pot carved out dedicated as your feel-good place to read, unwind, workout, get creative or whatever you desire to do in your home that makes you feel happy and healthy away from the everyday hustle and bustle. Whatever or wherever the space is, we all deserve room to retreat, recharge and reconnect with who we are and what we love. Doesn’t that sound beautiful?
